Re:Nylon

Prada has always employed nylon as a main material. The brand's debut in 1984 of Pocone in its collection of accessories and bags won it worldwide acclaim. Miuccia Prada expanded the collection to include nylon dresses for her own label as well as Linea Rossa, the nylon-heavy, buzzbeast-ready diffusion range that Frank Ocean recently dressed himself in for the Met Gala. The Milan-based brand has reimagined its iconic nylon bags by turning them into eco-friendly re:Nylon fabrics. The new collection comes with six classic designs including bags for belts, a shoulder bag, tote bag, duffle bag and two backpacks made from recycled ECONYL fabric that's created from recycled fishing nets, plastics and textile fiber wastes sourced worldwide.

The recycled material is the result of a partnership with Aquafil which is a textile yarn producer in Italy that makes Econyl fabric made from regenerated nylon waste. This fabric can be recycled many times without losing its quality. The Business of Fashion reports that the repurposed material is part of a larger plan to change the entire Prada portfolio from virgin nylon to Re:Nylon by 2021. In addition to the six new Re:Nylon bags, the collection includes a pair of boots and shoes constructed from repurposed ECONYL and various apparel items made of the same fabric.

To celebrate the launch, Prada partnered with National Geographic to produce a series of videos called "What We Carry" that shows the cutting-edge process which is used to make its Re:Nylon bags. The first video is a collaboration between Bonnie Wright, an environmentalist and Harry Potter actress, as well as National Geographic explorer Asher Jay visiting a carpet recycling plant in Arizona that converts old nylon into recycled ECONYL.

With the shift to re:Nylon, Prada is undergoing its biggest reduction in virgin nylon use to date, resulting in the reduction of 70,000 barrels of oil per year, The Business of Fashion reports. Additionally, the change will reduce the company's carbon footprint by 57,000 tonnes. The label has recently gone fur-free on its clothes and accessories. This is the most recent sustainable initiative.

Recycled nylon

Recycled nylon has its drawbacks. It's not biodegradable and will remain in oceans or landfills until it is broken into smaller pieces that could harm wildlife. The fabric is also not breathable and can shed microplastics when washed. It uses 50 percent less energy than normal virgin nylon, and is more durable.

The fabric is made of an amalgamation of petroleum and waste plastic, which is produced by burning fossil fuels. This means that it doesn't require more natural resources as well as the carbon emissions that come from the production of nylon that is virgin. It is also much easier than other bags to handle as it does not need to be dyed or woven. This makes it an excellent option for bags frequently used, like yoga or gym gear.

In addition to its environmental advantages, recycled nylon is a more durable and more flexible fabric than conventional polyester or cotton. It is also able to endure a lot of abuse and is therefore ideal for backpacks and other outdoor equipment. The material is also incredibly light and can be easily formed and stitched into the ideal shape for a bag. Nylon is a fantastic material for outdoor gear because it's resistant to water and doesn't absorb odors.

When choosing a sustainable bag ensure that you look for the Oeko-Tex Standard 100 certification. This certification is a test for chemical residues as also social and environmental responsibility. This certification is an excellent indicator of brands that are honest and accountable.

Patagonia provides, for instance backpacks, ranges of backpacks and yoga gear made from recycled nylon, which is known as Econyl. This nylon is created in a closed-loop system which requires 50% less energy than regular virgin nylon. The brand also supports groups which are dedicated to protecting our planet.
